With colder weather comes the chance for outdoor faucets to freeze. This can be a big problem that can even affect the interior of your home. Here are 4 steps to prepare your faucets for the chilly temps.
1) Locate all outdoor faucets and remove hoses. Drain all moisture from the hoses and store in a garage or shed for the winter.
2) Find the shut-off valves for the faucets. The valves should be in your home, likely in the basement if you have one. Shut the water off by turning the valve in a clockwise direction.
3) Now that the valves are closed. Go outside and open the faucets to drain any water that may remain in the line. If water continues to flow the valves are not completely shut off. Leave the faucets turned on throughout the winter.
4) Insulate the pipes. You can wrap the pipes to keep them insulated throughout the cold weather. You can buy insulation sleeves at any hardware store.
